STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: IIM Jammu celebrated 31st National Road Safety Week by organising a session on ‘Road Safety and Traffic Awareness’. On the occasion, SSP Traffic, Joginder Singh outlined the importance of celebrating National Road Safety Week in a very informative and interactive session. He mentioned that 2018 witnessed a total 4,67,044 reported road accidents which claimed around 1.49 lakh lives. The primary reason for the same was over-speeding as stated by government report. He also mentioned that there has been a rise in road accidents by 0.49 per cent in 2018 as compared to 2017. “The hazard level of road accidents has been building up in India which ranks 1st in road accident deaths across 199 countries reported in World Road Statistics 2018,” he added. Joginder Singh also spoke about the 3Es of road safety i.e, Education, Engineering and Enforcement. He explained how strict regulations have helped to bring down the traffic violations to a large extent. “Among these the bike Challans dropped by 60 per cent and the seatbelt Challans for cars dropped by 40 per cent in Jammu city. The new regulation has worked as a deterrent against over speeding”, he added. The National Road Safety Week which is being celebrated from January 11 to 17 witnessed different initiatives for awareness taken by the Traffic Department to reduce road accidents. The Social Responsibility Committee of IIM Jammu joined hands with the traffic department to create safety awareness in Jammu. Dr Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Chairperson Student Affairs presented welcome address. The faculty members and MBA students of IIM Jammu pledged to follow road safety norms discussed during the session.
