The abduction and killing of a young army officer who had come to attend his cousin’s marriage in Shopian is the most reprehensible and heinous act by the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s history of turmoil. The young officer was commissioned in December last and was posted at Akhnoor. The act of abduction and killing an unarmed army man is no chivalry it is cowardice of the so-called Jihadist and their masters sitting confined in the comforts of their secured environment. Killings, forced disappearances, sexual violence has been there in the terror-affected State but such an incident has never taken place. It looks foreign militants are manning the business of terrorism in Kashmir. Such brutal and inhuman acts are mostly seen and heard in Arab world where ISSI is trying to establish its influence more. Kashmir has seen Rubaiya Sayeed’s abduction, Gaw Kadal massacre, killing of Lassa Kaul, Director, Doordarshan Kendra and the extent of terror was such that no Kashmiri priest came forward to perform Kaul’s last rites. It was eventually done by an army priest. A month later, militants had killed P.L Handoo, an Assistant Director in the Information Department. The 1995 kidnapping of the western tourists including two British tourists, Keith Mangan (from Middlesbrough) and Paul Wells; two Americans, John Childs of Simsbury, Connecticut and Donald Hutchings of Spokane, Washington; a German, Dirk Hasert; and a Norwegian, Hans Christian Ostrø remained the most controversial and mysterious incident till date. Of the six kidnapped one American managed to escape. The one whose body was taken to AIIMS for post-mortem had Al Fran carved onto his chest. The kidnappers were demanding the release of Pakistani militant Maulana Masood Azhar who had been imprisoned alongwith 20 other prisoners. Several national and international organisations issued appeals to Al-Faran to release the tourists. Till date nobody knows the fate of the foreign tourists. The Indian authorities alleged that Al-Faran was a branch of Harkat-ul-Ansar; however the militant group denied having any such ties to Al-Faran. So the present abduction and killing of a young army officer in Shopian could be the handy work of such elements who just want to keep the business of terror going or will it be a game changer in Kashmir?
