Feel younger, live younger. It’s no slogan- these are actual benefits of regular exercise. People with high levels of physical fitness are at a lower risk of being prone to diseases- according to a recent survey published in the Journal American Medical Association. In fact, exercise is one of the most important parts of keeping your body at a healthy weight.
There are many type of exercises that we may participate in. We may play badminton, football, netball or whatever games that we prefer. We may walk, jog, swim or climb a mountain. Older folks prefer less strenuous exercises like Tai chi, yoga or a leisurely stroll in the park. For the really fit, young people, there are rock climbing, gymnastics and other physically demanding activities. There is a well said quote by Edward Stanley-
“Those who do not find time for exercise will have to find time for illness.”
I like this quote because it speaks of the importance of dedication. We have to make time for exercise. As another quote said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
The benefits of exercises can therefore, be seen in everybody’s life.
Good health- It is impossible for one to keep good health without proper exercise. The best means of guarding oneself against disease is exercise itself. One who is weak in health often falls an easy prey to diseases.
Fit for outdoor work- A man, without taking exercises regularly, may fortunately, escape diseases but he keeps indifferent health and is hardly fit for outdoor work.
Alert brain & memory- Young boys and girls reading in schools or colleges can enjoy good health by taking out sometime for exercises. They should take sufficient exercises to counteract the effects of excessive brain work, often in small and ill ventelated rooms. Diabetes, which is a common disease with educated men in our country, is due to excessive brain work coupled with neglect of exercise.
Vigor & energy- For the victims of indigestion or dyspepsia, exercise is a great tonic. If they take a regular course of exercise even for a month, they will find most of their ailments gone.

Physical strength- A strong and manly structure and stature is the outcome of years of the exercise. If exercise is regularly taken, even bodily organs start functioning properly, giving rise to a feeling of joy and cheerfulness. It is a proven fact that through regular physical exercise one can attain immense physical strength.
Various types of exercises & their benefits-There are different types of exercises suited to different constitutions. The forms of exercises that are mostly recommended nowadays are-
Morning walk- It is the most common and suited to almost all constitutions.
Gymnastic exercises are best gone through under the guidance of an experienced teacher.
To weak constitutions, gymnastics may be positively injurious.
Free hand exercises can be easily practiced at home.
Yoga helps us control both mind as well as body.
Water aerobics & water sports- Working out in water is wonderful for seniors because water reduces stress and strain on the body joints.
Tips for getting regular exercises- Before you begin any exercise routine, especially if you’ve been inactive for a long time, or are over 40 years of age, be sure to consult a doctor or start up with very light exercises.
The type of exercises may comprise of aerobic or strength training, but preferably a combination of the two. Every thirty minutes a day of moderate exercises, such as brisk walk can be very helpful.
Incorporate as much slowly as you can by parking farther from the office, taking the stairs instead of the elevators and by walking instead of driving whenever you can.
To stay healthy, aim to exercise four to seven days each week. Take into account that very intense activities burn more calories in a shorter span than the low intense activities.
As we already know, exercise improves mood, but now research suggests that working out to music, as well as providing fun and motivation, may give exercises a cognitive boost.
“Listening to music may influence cognitive function through different pathways in the brain. The combination of music & exercise may stimulate & increase cognitive arousal while helping to organize cognitive output.”
All wonderful benefits aside, never has it been more important to establish a routine of regular exercise than in today’s increasingly sedentary world. Technology is great, but it is not a substitute for physical activity!
