State Times News JAMMU: A group of Gujjars, suspected to be bovine smugglers late last night thrashed policemen, vandalised several shops and damaged window panes of a government degree college near Battal Morh in Udhampur District. Two injured cops Rattan Singh and Amar Singh were rushed to Government Medical College Hospital while few of them were given first aid locally. According to watchman, who identified himself as Ashok Kumar in a viral video, the Gujjars in huge numbers went berserk when challenged by the police and asked to stop for verification of the cattle being transported on the highway. Some of them carrying Lathis pounced upon the police men and gave them severe thrashing resulting into injuries to half a dozen men in uniform. “The police remained mute spectators and allowed themselves to get assaulted,” the watchman said, adding that after vandalising several closed shops, the Gujjars managed to escape with bovine. While fleeing the Gujjars subjected the college building to huge stone pelting as a result of which window panes were damaged, according to Ashok Kumar. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered at Majalta Police Station in routine. Bovine smuggling is a common feature on the highway with police either preferring to be mute spectators or connive with the smugglers. In several cases, the bovine smugglers have managed to flee along with cattle after beating police personnel.
