Not a single eyebrow rose when the Centre for Media Studies (CMS) in its annual corruption study – CMS India Corruption Study 2017- released in January this year placed Jammu and Kashmir along with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh as most corrupt among 20 surveyed states. Reason; corruption and Jammu and Kashmir had become synonymous to each other. Taking advantage of the turbulent situation, everyone- the unscrupulous civil servant, the politician and even the separatist – has made the hay while sun kept shinning. The situation has turned so murkier that the people had lost the hope of getting out of the messy situation created by vested interests, due to lack of accountability and a part of appeasement, until a pleasant breather came from the Raj Bhavan this week. The incumbent, Governor Satya Pal Malik broke the shackles of hypocrisy, which has become hash-tag of ruling clan in the State, to call a spade a spade. He did some plain speaking about one and all. This surprised many. This also shocked many. The surprised ones are looking towards the shocked ones with contempt they deserve for having plundered.
STATE TIMES is bringing out a series based on views of cross section of people over the sensational disclosures of wrong doings and possible measures being taken for course correction. And, of course the likely action against wrong-doers!
K.B Jandial, a retired IAS officer, said kudos to Governor Satya Pal Malik for his bold anti-corruption drive in J&K. His efforts need support by all, especially the civil society. It is very common to target small ‘fishes’ in the administration but it is to be seen whether the Governor would hold accountable the then political masters who have forced the authorities to do injustice to the youth by selecting their political favourites. The citizens would be carefully watching further stringent follow-up action in these scandals. A bigger issue in the selection process is the brazen discrimination against the youth of Jammu in all Government positions. Hopefully, he will give attention to injustice to Jammu on different counts as Kashmir alone does not constitute entire J&K.
Sanjay Manhas, senior Congress leader said “I was totally shocked to hear about the sensational disclosure made by the Governor Satya Pal Malik. It was embarrassing for the people of Jammu region who gave massive mandate to the BJP leaders and in return they played with their sentiments. Governor Malik should continue with this spirit and make public the wrong-doing of BJP Government so that next time the people of Jammu should be careful before casting their votes.
Atul Sudan, JJSF President, while appreciating Governor Malik for highlighting the misdeeds of previous BJP-PDP Government, sought high-level probe to expose all the politicians and bureaucrats involved in this scam. This is very shameful act and the probe must be ordered in a time bound manner as it is a question of our youth who are indulging in anti-social activities due to the rising unemployment in the State, he added.
Ankush Sharma, a job aspirant, expressed surprise over the Governor Malik’s disclosure about the recruitment scam. He said it’s unfortunate for the students and unemployed youth who are working hard to get employment since it has shattered their confidence. To whom we should appeal to take action when the law-makers are themselves involved in such scams and working against the youths. He appealed to the Governor Malik to take stern action against such anti-youth politicians.
Advocate Pushvinder Singh lambasted the PDP-BJP Government for playing with the future of youth of J&K. He termed it as unfortunate as the youth already facing serious crisis due to unemployment in the State. He hailed the Governor Malik for exposing the recruitment scam. He asked the Governor to promote sports related activities in the State so that youth should spend their maximum time in sports instead of indulging in stone-pelting or anti-national activities.
Ashu Sharma, a home maker said, “I really appreciate the efforts of Governor S.P Malik. Our State was in need of such honest Governor who can fight for justice and is bold enough to take stringent steps.
No other Governor has dared to take such bold steps and expose scams on such a large scale. He is the best Governor our State ever had.”
Monika Chandel, a working woman said, “A big applause for the present Governor who is bold to raise voice against injustice being done with youth. Now, we hope that a new era of development and accountability will begin in our State. I believe it is good to be in Governor rule rather than conducting elections. Let here be Governor’s rule so that accountability becomes a practice.”
