BLUNT BUTCHER / ANCHOR
BJP can’t run with hare and hunt with hounds. It will have to take a stand. Attaining power might be a short term objective of electoral politics but it can’t be an end destination and that too for an outfit known as a party with difference. It is, however, different that some of its ministers in Jammu and Kashmir are carrying dark blots of corruption. But still the people consider BJP a lesser evil, if not for its state level leaders and ministers but because of the larger than life size image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
That Jammu and Kashmir BJP is playing a second fiddle to Kashmir centric PDP is not hidden from anyone its core constituency in Jammu. In fact, the BJP is crawling before the PDP which had asked them just to bow down. Why is the BJP doing all this? Why is it behaving more awkwardly than Congress did in the earlier coalition dispensations? The people of Jammu know very well. They know that it is now and never for the party to be in power and, therefore, time to enjoy loaves. That may be alright for individuals but what on the larger issue of national interest.
The BJP has miserably failed in Kashmir. Ever since its partnership in the government with Muftis, the situation is going from bad to worse. The gratitude expressed to the separatists, terrorists and Pakistan on the very first day of the taking over of PDP-BJP Government has served as a license to unleash upheaval. Rest is just a nightmare. The forces are not brazenly and publicly humiliated, abused, attacked, belittled and humiliated. This is virtually become order of the day. Nobody among the BJP ministers has ever dared to ask questions; to show resentment; to press for action; to end appeasement; to extend concessions.
Now that a minister had mustered the courage to call spade a spade, the BJP’s top brass in New Delhi and in Jammu went into hibernation. This indifference towards the most treacherous type of Kashmir unrest is going to cost the nation dearly.
Now the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has reached such a morass that competitive race has been to provide legitimacy to stone-pelters, who are the modified version of gun-totting terrorists. They are not just hurling stones at the security forces but also carrying out a Palestine type Intifada to carry forward the campaign of seceding Kashmir from India. It is a soft terrorism. They are not stone pelters but traitors, which a BJP minister had tried to convey in his own way. And, this frank speaking has let lose a hell despite the minister retracting his statement and regretting his words. This is, however, not a point or an issue because this had to happen given the lust for power among BJP leaders. The larger issue is the debate which this statement has generated. An effort is being made to accord legitimacy to stone-pelting or Intifada.
Dr Farooq Abdullah, who eulogized stone pelters in the run up to the recent bypolls, has taken on bête noire PDP for aligning with the BJP and thus validating such remarks (stone pelters should be tackled by bullets and sticks) “at the cost of our peoples’ sense of dignity and respect”. One hopes that the former Chief Minister does not portray entire Kashmir population as stone pelters. His party had a bitter experience in dealing with the stone-pelters in 2010. National Conference lost 2014 elections for the ‘sole crime’ of 110 deaths of stone-pelters. They had died while clashing with police and security forces. Weren’t they pelting stones for their ‘nation’ at that point of time? This is how hypocrite Kashmiri politicians keep changing colours like chameleons to have best of both the worlds. By holding brief for stone-pelters, they are actually condoning the crimes these Pak lackeys are committing on daily basis.
In this competitive heroism of stone pelters, BJP’s alliance partner PDP too doesn’t wants to be seen lagging behind National Conference, separatists and terror organizations. One after another of its leaders is blowing hot and cold over the remarks of the BJP minister, which are irrelevant after he withdrew these and apologized to the people. However, the mute question remains as to whether the BJP too has fallen in line with National Conference, PDP and other separatist and terror outfits to espouse the cause of stone pelters, who are essentially traitors. If PDP and NC continue to remain in denial about stone-pelters not being traitors then they should accept the responsibility of killing hundreds of them in 2010 and 2016.
