Dear Editor, As a woman, I feel insulted on knowing that travel is being made free of cost for me because of my gender. They are saying safety is their concern. How thoughtful! The safety of all citizens should be a national issue. It is not only about women. They are spreading gender inequality through this decision. Moreover, Metro runs from and to certain points. Other areas have to be covered through autorickshaws and buses, etc. What about our safety then? It does not make any sense to make this concession for women. There are people out there who are in actual need of such subsidies. Provide them with it rather than offer it to women in the name of safety and empowerment. Increase in the percentage of working women can be brought through by providing them with opportunities to work, learn and grow. Those who can afford the tickets may forego the subsidy.
