STATE TIMES NEWS UDHAMPUR: To create awareness about child abuse among students and teachers, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Udhampur on Friday organised a day long awareness programme on Protection of Children from and Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Delhi Public School, here. The students of classes VI to IX learnt about common signs of abuse, the kind of abusers and how a teacher’s intervention and care can make a huge difference in a child’s life. Awareness Camp was held under the chairmanship of Sub Judge Sandeep Kour, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Udhampur. Resource person Child Psychologist Malika Gautam, and Retainer Lawyer Swatanter Dev and Sanjit Kumar were present. The session enlightened the students about protection of children through POSCO Act, and its provisions. The programme started with a brief introduction about POCSO by Resource Person Child Psychologist Malika Gautam and Anmol Rathore. The Secretary DLSA explained in detail the legal protection against the child sexual abuse and rights of children. She said that the aim of organising such programme is to educate every child of his/her rights guaranteed under different laws and about ways to fight any kind of physical, sexual, emotional or psychological abuse at the hands of any person at home or outside home. She also spoke on the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act and POCSO laws. She urged parents and teachers to immediately contact legal service authority, police or court in case any child abuse case takes place to ensure justice to the victim, instead of trying to hide the same. She also asked students to learn from the awareness session and be the ambassadors of change with sharing awareness of child rights to each student, siblings and friends to stop child abuse in the society. The programme was attended by students, teachers, members of DLSA Udhampur and Retainer lawyers besides others. There was also an interactive session wherein the queries of students were sorted out. The Pro Vice Chairman of the School, Dr. J.C Gupta in his address thanked the Sub Judge Sandeep Kour, Malika Gautam, Anmol Rathore and S.D Kotwal. He said that workshop like these are an eye opener for the kids that what all needs to be done in case of child abuse. The teachers were informed about the helpline numbers, apps and the POCSO E box which came in handy to deal with such problems. The Principal of the School, Dr. Kunal Anand requested the teachers to join hands to eradicate this evil from the society so that new generation can face the society fearlessly and lead a life with great self respect. He concluded by saying that if the teachers become an epitome of love and affection for their students it would help the students to break the shackles of the cruel stigma.
