STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: To awaken the consumers about their rights and legal protection available through legislation enacted forums, Consumer Protection Organization on Friday celebrated National Consumer Rights Day here. On the occasion, Mayor Jammu, Chander Mohan Gupta was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Mayor appreciated the efforts of CPO for organizing the programme with a view to impart awareness among the consumers. Mayor JMC urged upon consumers to assert their rights and discharge their responsibilities while making purchases and availing services. “The consumers should demand valid bill and check mandatory declarations while buying pre-packed commodities and on finding any violation, consumers should approach the concerned department for redressal,” Gupta said. D.R Danish, President CPO said that beauty of the Act is that an aggrieved consumer can file a complaint to the forum on a plain paper and doesn’t require to have service of a lawyer. But it’s a matter of great concern that these consumer foras are following the footsteps of other Civil Courts and proving to be a costly affair to the aggrieved consumers and jolting the efforts of Consumer Protection Act, he said. “Our state while enacting the Act has not provided for pronouncing judgement within 90 days, unlike provided in the National Act. It’s observed the case are delayed for a considerable time leading to mental agony to the aggrieved consumers,” he said. Officials of Department of FCS&CA and Legal Metrology Department explained various tactics of sellers deceiving consumers including the possibilities of manipulation in weights and measuring instruments, MRP of package commodities, etc.
