Rameshwar Singh Jamwal, Advocate In a few months, the after effects of COVID-19 would be there to be seen and felt by the entire population on this globe. We would have been left with lesser number of inhabitants, shattered communities, and economic meltdown at unprecedented levels, which would affect billions, all due to the follies and ambitions of a few. At present, the entire effort of governments is to see that the virus does not spread more and more and more people get saved, by efforts to find out its antidote and to quarantine the entire nations. This seems to be an imposing task at the moment but we cannot lose hope. But once this entire nightmare is over, we have to think of the future, why this has happened and what we need to do in the future so that we will be in a position to save the human race from extinction. This is the time to ponder, to introspect, to revisit our outlook towards the other creatures, the nature and may be towards our thinking towards the creator as well. The persons who, thought that their religions were better than others, their beliefs were more superior, their castes, their communities, their way of thinking, literature, ideologies or may be colour, were superior, are today hiding behind the four walls of their homes, praying for safety. There is no saviour from the aforesaid. Even non believers and atheists have turned towards the ultimate creator, for safety. It has demolished the egos of the mightiest, the mighty nations, the mighty leaders and the self acclaimed mighty ideologies. A small creation of the almighty has brought them to their kneels, all their super computers, the artificial intelligence, the weaponry, the super structures, and many other ways of better standards have been demolished by just a tiny creation. It has also demolished the thinking of the religious zealots and bigots, who were having the notions that their religions should be the only one to be practiced by the entire humankind and were thus spending so much energy, money and muscle power to propagate their concepts. If their thinking would have been right, then only the persons from other beliefs should have died but the Supreme has shown that for him, everybody is equal. It has pitted one life form to demolish the superiority complex of the other. Today, everybody is praying for all, not for his own co-religionists. This attitude needs to be strengthened, as we have been saying for centuries, “Om Dyauha Shantirantaririksham Ahantihi” (May peace radiate there in the whole sky as well as in the vast ethereal space everywhere. May peace be in the Supreme Being Brahman. And may there always exist in all peace and peace alone.) At present, as we look towards the source of this scourge, we may notice that all is shrouded in mystery. Wuhan in China may be the epicenter and Chinese may be the blame boys at the moment, but such efforts to create such monsters are going on in several countries, we have been trying to control the destinies of others and here lies the actual problem. If human factor is involved in mutation of this virus, it’s for International Criminal Court to take cognizance but if nations and individuals are involved only in its spread, even then they must not be let off so easily for causing this tragedy of such magnitude, somebody must be made to pay for it. At another level, we need to see as to why humans do such acts and is there any solution for modification of their behaviours. It will require several dozen pages to describe it but we can assume that by simply putting the ball in the court of nature is not going to lead us anywhere. There is a huge fallacy in our effort to describe and define nature. After all, what is nature? At the macro level, this entire universe, galaxies, black holes, stars, planets, oceans, mountains etc constitute nature. At the micro level, atoms, neutrons, protons, electrons, photons, hydrons etc can be considered to be nature. But have they decided to punish humans for their transgressions, for their follies, for their greed, for their ambitions and for their attempts to disturb the balance. Those lifeless creatures cannot decide the future of other forms of life. Describing “Life” itself is a challenge for the scientists, to understand the life of these tiny bacteriophages, prokaryotes and viruses and their behavior would be something too much at the moment. The physicists are still grappling to find out the basic building blocks of the Universe and the biologists are having the similar quandaries, what causes the genes, the viruses, the bacteria to behave in a particular fashion and how their behaviors can be modified. These and hundreds of such questions will continue to haunt and puzzle us till we turn towards the ultimate philosophies of the world, the Sankhya, Yoga and other Indian philosophies which have ample descriptions of these puzzles and prescribe the ways for the world to follow, if it wants to survive. All these can’t be described in this article, nor I have the sagacity, enlightenment and mental ability to give explanation for all those sayings and philosophies but suffice to say that till we overcome the “Avidya”, (meaning ignorance, misconceptions, misunderstandings, incorrect knowledge, and it is the opposite of Vidya), we are going to suffer not only this particular onslaught of Nature but many more in near future and may be that would be too late to act.
