JAMMU: Panic gripped the busy Shaheedi Chowk area in Kathua on Monday morning when Ex-PSO to Health Minister Ch Lal Singh was shot at. The assailants abandoned their car and managed to escape on a bike snatched from a youth on Kathua-Pathankot National Highway.
Police has detained a local youth and grilled the PSO of Station House Officer, Kathua, who was accompanying the injured cop for questioning.
The shootout has baffled the police, as the two constables-one an Anti Gunda Squad member and other the SHO’s PSO had gone to meet the youth, believed to be involved in drug racketing. The intelligence inputs are suggestive of a nexus.
Additional SP Kathua, Nasir Ahmed Khan said that incident cannot be equated with a terror attack. “It can be some case related to drugs,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated thoroughly.
The abandoned Swift car, which was later found to be stolen, has been seized while the injured Constable Jagdish Singh was rushed to District Hospital, where doctors referred him to GMC Jammu. The detained cop, accompanying the victim, has been identified as Rahul Thakur, PSO to SHO, Kathua, The other arrested youth, Kamal Kishore, son of Surinder Singh , resident of Ward No 2, Kathua was also accompanying the duo.
Jagdish Singh, son of Jai Singh, presently posted with the Anti Gunda Squad was standing at the Chowk when shot at.
In a statement to police, the injured cop and the accompanying Constable Rahul Thakur have denied to have identified the attacker.
Though Kathua Police is denying any link of the injured policeman with the drugs mafia yet the intelligence inputs suggest some sort of nexus between the injured and the assailant. Efforts are being made to nab the shooter to unfold the mystery, said a senior police officer.
Sources said the cops had met the assailants to strike a drugs deal and during negotiations the victim had slapped one of the assailants who opened fire at him in the wake of grave provocation.
The seized Swift car, bearing a fake registration number (PB11BP-5300), is reported to be in the name of one Som Popli, son of Maar Chand, House No 1157, Sector 13 UE, Karnal (Ph 9812002737). On being contacted, the assumed owner has denied ownership of the car. The chassis and the engine number mentioned on the registration papers of the Swift do not match.
A local youth Kamal Kishore, son of Surinder Singh, resident of Ward number 2, Kathua has been detained while Constable Rahul Thakur who was accompanying Jagdish has been set free after the day-long questioning.
