CONTRACT KILLER ON RUN: To avert jail, plan escape, Sunny Baba managed 41 days hospitalisation

JAMMU: For forty one days, contract killer Sunny Baba managed his admission in Recovery Ward of the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital here despite having been
discharged thrice. The discharge and re-admission exposes nexus between police and the doctors in Kot Bhalwal Jail and the GMC.
Two doctors close to Health Minister Ch Lal Singh-one posted at GMC and the other, a lady doctor posted at Kot Bhalwal Jail besides other two lady doctors of GMC and
few Nursing Orderlies allegedly facilitated Sunny Baba’s long drawn hospitalisation.
According to sources, a police team investigating the case pertaining to escape of the notorious contract killer from GMC hospital on August 22 has zeroed on a few
senior doctors, reportedly hand in glove, who played important role in Baba’s hospitalisation in the Recovery Ward of the Emergency Wing, where from patients are
shifted to respective wards within 24 hours. However, Sunny Baba was privileged to stay put there from admission to the escape.
Three times, between July 11 to August 22, doctors discharged him but he managed his re-admission within minutes. This is baffling the police.
Sunny Baba is reported to have used high connections apart from coercing doctors, who advised his discharge, to remain in the hospital. This, the sources believe, was
part of the plan to make escape despite 8-men police guard stationed in the ward round the clock.
Baba has taken away his hospital file also. Police has written to SP Central Jail Kot Bhalwal and Principal Government Medical College Jammu seeking circumstances
under which he was shifted and admitted to GMC Hospital on July 11 without any serious ailment.
Kot Bhalwal Central Jail Superintendent Dinesh Sharma, instead of responding to circumstances leading to Sunny Baba’s hospitalisation, however, blamed 8-member police guard deployed from the DPL Jammu for his escape.
Around August 1, Dr Vijyant Chandel, a reputed gastroentologist discharged Baba by declaring him fit. However, he was threatened by the contract killer as a result of which he got re-admitted within minutes in another Unit of Medicine Department.
Earlier, soon after his arrival to GMC hospital on July 11, Sunny Baba was discharged as he was stable and healthy. Three senior doctors at Kot Bhalwal Central Jail referred him to GMC Hospital where the doctors on duty found nothing serious.
The trio, including wife of a GMC faculty member, who happens to be close to Ch Lal Singh, posted at Kot Bhawal, referred Sunny Baba for GMC, sources alleged.
Thereafter, he managed to stay in the hospital against medical advice, without any question being raised either by the Jail staff or the police guard deployed with him.
Two lady doctors and another doctor associated with sports medicine posted in GMC, who also happens to be confident of Health Minister Ch Lal Singh, allegedly supported the criminal.
On August 10, Sunny managed to get referral for PGI, Chandigarh. But as Sunny had a plan to flee, he used the admission and subsequent referral to Chandigarh as a breathing time to plan escape. He didn’t move to Chandigarh but preferred to stay at GMC’s Recovery Ward.
Sources alleged that Sunny’s mother, who is also an employee of Health Department, also used her links to manage Baba’s stay in GMC’s Recovery Ward.
On August 22, Sunny managed to flee with the active connivance of another GMC employee Manav Sharma, who too is missing since then.
Dr Annil Mahajan HoD , Department of Medicine told STATE TIMES, ” Sunny Baba was referred to GMC by the Kot Bhalwal Jail doctors after he complained vomiting blood and passing it with stools as well.”
“During examination we found no active bleeding and therefore suggested to police to take him back to jail or keep him in police hospital or take him outside the state for further examination, if they suspect some problem,” said Dr Mahajan, adding “but he kept managing admissions in various units.” The doctor, however, could not say how the hospital allowed a patient’s stay without medical advice.
Eight police personnel, including an ASI, deployed with Sunny Baba besides his three associates, who stayed all along with him in GMC Hospital have been booked.
Police is waiting for the reply from the Kot Bhalwal Jail and GMC administration regarding the names of the doctors who allowed Baba to stay at GMC.
Sunny Choudhary alias Sunny Baba, son of Ramesh Choudhary, resident of House No-102 Hajipura Choudhary Niwas Nai Basti Gandhi Nagar Jammu was arrested in March, 2011, for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to eliminate witnesses in Amandeep murder case.
Three associates of Sunny Baba, who have been arrested, include Rajeshwar Singh, resident of Bantalab, Rahul Kumar, resident of R S Pura and Kuldeep Singh from Nowshera.
The police personnel arrested for negligence and lapse include ASI Krishan Chand, Head Constable Varinder Singh, SgCTs Jia Lal and Santosh Raj, Constables Shabir Ahmed, Noor Mohd, Pawan Singh and Rashpaul Singh, who have been booked under FIR (93/15).
