JAMMU: In a major achievement, a scientist of SKUAST Jammu, Dr Vikas Sharma, Assistant Professor (Biochemistry), Faculty of Basic Sciences, SKUAST-J, identified four minor fruits viz, Bael, Jamun, Karonda and Phalsa that possess anticancer potential against human lung cancer cells.
While working on minor fruits of Kandi belt of Jammu region from the last four years, Dr Sharma along with his Ph.D scholar Navneet Kour yielded very interesting results from medicinal view point as during the investigation these four minor fruits confirmed their therapeutic potency especially against lung cancer cells and showed that these fruits possess certain cytotoxic constituents that can be used for developing anticancer agents for lung cancer therapy to provide a great service to cancer patients.
Dr Vikas informed that cancer cases are on rise in Jammu and Kashmir with lung cancer becoming most prominent due to smoking.
The summer capital Srinagar tops the number with 898 cancer patients while the number stands at 853 in Jammu and it stands at 62 in Ladakh. He said that our Jammu region has great botanical diversity, but minor fruits of Kandi belt have not been subjected to accepted scientific evaluation for their potential anticancer effects.
Dr Vikas stressed that people of J&K should encourage the consumption of these minor fruits as regular consumption of these fruits is associated with reduced risk of lung cancer.
