JAMMU: The opposition Congress on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, demanding details about the projects being undertaken in Ladakh to promote tourism.
Replying to a question of member Asgar Ali Karbalaie in the Assembly, Minister for Tourism Tassaduq Hussain
Mufti said that the government had set up a separate Tourism Development Authority which is looking after all the development activities of the Kargil region.
Regarding making of a short film, the department has produced a film on autumn season in which Kargil has been depicted, he said.
However, Asgar asked supplementary questions to the minister to give details of what projects have been undertaken by the government in the region.
Mufti said that he has recently taken over as the tourism minister and he will undertake all measures to promote the region.
MLA from Nubra, Deldan Namgyal intervened and asked the minister to give specific works done by the tourism department in Ladakh as the region is facing discrimination despite world-known tourism destination.
On this, the Congress members got up from their seats to press for details about the projects done in Ladakh by this government.
They cornered the minister by asking several questions and details.
However, MoS Tourism Priya Sethi stood up to answer them and tried to pacify the opposition Congress members by replying to the supplementary questions, but they were unsatisfied.
Priya Sethi said that a separate Tourism Development Authority has been set up to ensure holistic development of Kargil from the tourism point of view as this area has tremendous potential for religious, border, adventure and cultural tourism.
Under Tourism Incentive Rules-2012, all the areas within the jurisdiction of Tourism Development Authority Kargil and Zanskar and Tourist Villages covered under Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) are eligible for incentives for construction of hotel, motel, restaurant, conversion of Private Houses into Paying Guest Houses etc, she said.
The minister also said that new strategies are continuously being devised to increase arrival of domestic and international tourists in the areas.
“The Tourism Department has prepared publicity material for Kargil which is being circulated in tourism marts of National and International levels. The publicity material is also kept available at the offices of the Tourism Department located outside the State,” the minister elaborated.
She said under the Prime Minister’s Developmental Package (PMDP), the Tourism Department has hired consultants for framing projects to be submitted to Union Ministry of Tourism.
The consulting firms include M/S Power Tech for promotion of Heritage and Himalayan tourism, Dara Shah for Eco Tourism and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) for Adventure Tourism. She said the consultants have been hired by the Department for framing the projects across the State including Kargil District.
