STATE TIMES NEWS JAMMU: A number of Congress workers on Friday held a protest here against the detention of party leader, Priyanka Gandhi by Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district. The Congress General Secretary, Incharge Uttar Pradesh East, was detained on Friday and stopped from going to Sonbhadra, where 10 people were gunned down. The Congress leaders was taken to a guesthouse, after she squatted on the road, insisting that she should be allowed to proceed. Ten people were killed while 18 got injured in a clash between supporters of a village head and Gond-tribals, over a land dispute in Sonbhadra’s Ghorawal area on Wednesday. Led by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, Gulam Ahmed Mir, a large number of Congress workers and leaders assembled in front of party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk here and held a protest against BJP-led Uttar Pradesh Government and Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath. Carrying party flags, the party activists and leaders raised slogans against BJP and burnt an effigy of UP Chief Minister. Raising slogans in favour of Priyanka, the workers slammed BJP Government in Uttar Pradesh for preventing her to meet families of victims. While addressing media, Mir criticised BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for the ‘worst law and order situation’. He also lashed out at UP Government for ‘anti-democratic action’ on Priyanka and taking her into custody, when she was on her way to meet ‘victims of massacre’. Mir alleged that the UP Government prevented Priyanka to proceed onwards just for ‘hiding its worst failure in maintaining law and order and ensuring safety of poor people’. Others present in the protest included Raman Bhalla, Ravinder Sharma, Kanta Bhan, Rajnish Sharma, Shah Mohammad Chowdhary, Manmohan Singh, Indu Pawar, Vikram Malhotra, Hari Singh Chib, Shabir Ahmed Khan, Manjit Singh, Vinod Sharma, Udhaey Chib, Dr Rashid Choudhary, JMC Corporators Ch Darwika, Gourav Chopra, Bhanu Mahajan, Ritu Choudhary, Ch Mohi-ud-Din, Pritam Singh, Inderjeet Kaur, Sobat Ali, Suresh Dogra, Pranab Shagotra, Pawan Raina, Narinder Sharma, Raqeeq Khan, Suresh Dogra, Rajiv Saraf, Rajveer Singh, Manjit Jatt, Sanjeev Pandha, Dr R.K Khajuria, Sahil Sharma, H S Metha, Rajinder Singh Pinky, Hoshiar Chib, Ricky Daotra, Gajan Singh and Varun Magotra. Meanwhile, the Pradesh Youth Congress (PYC), J&K unit led by its President, Uday Chib also staged a protest against UP government for detaining Priyanka Gandhi. Hitting out at UP Government for stopping Priyanka Gandhi from proceeding to Sonbhadra, Chib said that the action was an open ‘disrespect of democracy’. He accused Narendra Modi Government of crushing the voice of democracy and not letting opposition parties to protest against its anti-people policies. He also lashed out at BJP Government at the Centre and accused it of misusing Government agencies for political benefits. Others who joined the protest included Ajaz Choudhary (Vice-President), Nimrandeep Singh and Sahil Langeh (General Secretaries), Ricky Dalotra, Ramansh Jamwal, Davinder Resiyal, Brinder Partap (Secretaries), Neeraj Choudhary (President Jammu Rural), Manav Choudhary (General Secretary) and Sunny Jatt (President Raipur Domana).
