NEW DELHI: Concerned over the “disturbed” situation in the Valley, the Congress on Wednesday formulated a policy-planning group for Jammu and Kashmir to take forward the peace initiative in the state.
The Congress has been critical of the Centre as well as the PDP-BJP coalition government over the handling of the situation in J&K since July last year.
The policy-planning group is chaired by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and includes former Home Minister P Chidambaram and CWC members Karan Singh and Ghulam Nabi Azad, besides the J&K Congress in charge Ambika Soni.
Cong, NC delegation meets Mukherjee, Rahul
NEW DELHI: A joint delegation of Congress and National Conference led by JKPCC President G.A. Mir met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Wednesday and apprised him of the overall situation prevailed in the Valley. The delegation gave a detailed presentation to President about overall socio political scenario obtaining in the State especially in Kashmir valley and apprised him of the hardships being faced by the people due to the failures of the present government on all fronts. The delegation expressed serious concern over the situation that prevailed in the Valley and said that it was the duty of the State Government to create a conducive atmosphere and appropriate security environment, but it utterly failed as a result the situation continues to deteriorate thereby causing loss of precious lives.
The delegation apart from other things briefed the President of the brutalities inflicted on students in Colleges and expressed serious concern over use of force on students in various in the valley, the impact of which, has severely affected the education system in the valley.
The delegation urged the President to prevail upon Centre Govt to hold talks with all stakeholders in the State in order to put an end to the crisis in the valley and emphasized that Centre should be asked to reach out to the people especially youth in the valley in order to instill the confidence among the people.
Earlier, the delegation called on Congress Vice PresidentRahul Gandhi in Delhi and apprised him about the situation obtaining in the valley. The delegation, threadbare discussed the current political crisis with Congress Vice President and also urged upon him to prevail upon Centre Government to initiate talks with all the Stakeholders in the state to resolve the crisis.
Those who comprised the delegations included CLP Leader Nawang Rigzin Jora, MLA Mubarak Gul, Dy.CLP leader Aijaz Ahmad Khan, MLA G.M. Saroori, MLA Haji Ab. Rashid Dar, MLA Gulzar Ahmad Wani, MLA Altaf Kaloo, MLC Showket Hussain Ganie, MLA Abdul Majeed Larmi and Th. Balbir Singh.
Other leaders who are part of the group include J-K Congress president Ghulam Ahmed Mir, CLP leader Rigzin Zora, former MP Tariq Hameed Karra and party Vice President Shyam Lal Sharma. “Congress president Sonia Gandhi has constituted a policy-planning group for Jammu and Kashmir under the chairmanship of Dr Manmohan Singh,” AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement.
Sources said the group will study and assess the ground situation and make initiatives for restoring normalcy to the State, which is facing unrest for quite some time now.
