TSEWANG RIGZIN LEH: The biggest celebration of Buddha Purnima to commemorate 2563rd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha in Ladakh was held at Leh’s historic Polo-Ground on Saturday with thousands of devotees paying homage to Lord Buddha. The Buddha Jayanti celebrations were organised by Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA). The celebrations started from Chokhang Vihara with a procession, which was attended by a number of students, monks and devotees from various sections of society. Every person was carrying a volume of Tripitika to pay homage to the enlightened one and to spread message of peace, harmony and non-violence as taught by Lord Buddha. Tableaus representing twelve enlightening deeds of Lord Buddha were also taken out during the procession. Skyabje Tokdan Rinpoche, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, inaugurated the celebrations by lighting ‘sacred butter lamp’ and consecrating the payer flag, hoisted earlier in the day. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included CEC LAHDC Leh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; MLC Chering Dorjey and heads of various religious and political organisations of Leh. Speaking on the occasion, Skyabje Tokdan Rinpoche advised people to practice teachings of the enlightened one in letter and spirit. President LBA Tsewang Thinles advised parents to impart the best education to children as education is the only solution to all problems arising in world. “World needs peace, as we see violence across the world and a holistic education to younger generation will make the world a better place to live in,” he added. The President Ladakh Gonpa Association, Shetup Chamba spoke on the life and deeds of Lord Buddha. A blood donation camp was also organised on the occasion by LBA Youth Wing in collaboration with the Medical Department, wherein volunteers were advised to register their names to meet emergencies in future. Mesmerising cultural performances and skits by students from different schools depicting life and deeds of Lord Buddha were also presented. The students, who took part in essay writing competition in Bhoti language on Ambedkar Jayanti and won 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in different categories, were presented prizes by the Chief Guest. Vice President LBA, Rinchen Namgyal presented formal vote of thanks. Buddha Purnima, a tripled blessed occasion, is celebrated across the world to mark the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvan (Death) of Lord Buddha in the 6th century (BC).
