Over a century and half ago, Abraham Lincoln had perhaps coined an adage for people akin to Amit Shah, National President of BJP, who came and left Jammu like a whirlwind after sprinkling salt on the injuries of Jammuites. The adage, “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time” fits well with Shah.
How can Amit Shah fool the people of Jammu and Ladakh by merely saying that these two regions were discriminated upon by the PDP. If so, what were his ministers doing in the ministry? Shah spoke about AIIMS and three Government Medical Colleges sanctioned for Kathua, Doda and Rajouri districts of the Jammu region but didn’t say a word as to who were the ministers for health and forests. What did his Health Minister do with regard to opening of these Medical Colleges and moving forward to setting up of AIIMS for which the obstacles in acquiring land could not be cleared by the Forest Minister?
If Jammu is reeling under the power crisis, who is to be blamed? The power portfolio rested with the BJP and this ministry failed in raising a viable infrastructure in ensuring power to the region for scorching summer months, at least. This ministry did virtually nothing in implementation of the flagship programme of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna, designed to provide continuous power supply to rural areas. The Jammu suburbs and rural areas are braving the power crisis like the cities and urban pockets.
BJP National President went on saying that whopping Rs 80,000 crore funds, sanctioned for the State, were not utilised by the PDP headed government at par in all the three regions. Why BJP ministers didn’t raise any alarm? What is his take on the status of the Artificial River Tawi Lake Project and its allied project with regard to beautification of the Suryaputri water body? Who were the ministers responsible for expediting these projects and why they failed miserably in achieving the desired targets? Amit Shah should also have spelled out the constraints in moving forward with regard to Smart City project that could have benefitted Jammu the most, being the much thronged pilgrim destination of north India. The charge of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development rested with the BJP, which failed in delivering. If this ministry can take credit of any achievement, it should be for converting Jammu into a big slum.
Will the BJP chief tell the people of Jammu about the role of his ministers and action or reaction thereof to the share in recruitment to educated youth of this region by the agencies like Public Service Commission and Subordinate Selection Board? Jammu has hugely been discriminated during the past three and half years, as never before, with regard to employment which is reportedly just five per cent in certain categories compared to the most favoured region.
Amit Shah spoke about loot by particular families of Jammu and Kashmir. Despite knowing and naming the families, he preferred to align with one of the family. By the way, he should get a feedback from his BJP cadre in Jammu, who will give him the definition of loot and corruption engineered during the past three and half years. The BJP workers will perhaps tell their National President as to who indulged and perpetrated corruption by putting everything on sale and by running transfer industries.
As regards bruising the psyche of the Jammu region, Amit Shah must ask his dumped ministerial lot as to why they became partners in issuance of the directions to Deputy Commissioners of Jammu, inter alia asking them, “…, not to provide any police protection for eviction of tribals without the approval obtained from Tribal Affairs Department (TAD); till a formal tribal policy is formulated and issued, tribal population shall not be disturbed or dislocated; in case it becomes absolutely necessary to dislocate any member or family of tribal population, the same should be done in prior consultation with the TAD; and, given the misuse of Section 188 RPC and Animal Cruelty Act against the tribals in a situation when animal rearing is their profession and they are required to transport their animals from one place to another, they (officers) should take due care while dealing with such cases”. And when the sagacious people of Jammu raised concerns about these directions under the aegis of Jammu Bar Association, which managed a unprecedented successful Bandh, the BJP Jammu did not only oppose it but supported all those who maligned the people of this region as ‘rapist supporters’.
Amit Shah should better have asked the BJP ministerial lot, as to how many times they raked up the issue of illegally settled Rohingyas in Jammu, posing a security threat as also concerns about change in the demography. Instead, Mehbooba Mufti left with her last laugh, saying she managed amnesty for 11,000 stone pelters, who attacked and humiliated the Army and Para Military Forces besides Police on the streets and squares of Kashmir.
The BJP has succeeded in fooling the people of Jammu for some time but they can’t do it all the times.
