Come elections baits are there to catch maximum voters. Every party comes out with some or the other offer so that voters remain stuck to it. In one such a way a big bang election promise made by the Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday is really going to get the party the top numbers! The Congress chief has announced that 20 per cent families belonging to the poorest category will be given Rs 72,000 each annually as minimum income if his party comes to power. Irony is that as per government calculations the single value of the NMW (National Minimum Wage) for India has been set at Rs 375 per day as of July 2018. Considering a worker works for 26 days a month, the minimum monthly wage came to Rs 9,750 per month and annually it comes to Rs 1, 17,000 for a working person. This is recommended by the expert committee set-up by the Centre in February this year. On the contrary Congress chief offering Rs 72,000 would be an incentive without working. On the hand the ground reality is far away. Minimum wages are really minimum in real value terms and the economic plight of such groups are pathetic. The Congress party estimates 25 crore families to be direct beneficiaries of the scheme. “Final assault on poverty has begun. We will wipe out poverty from the country,” Gandhi had said while addressing a press conference in New Delhi. At last he has been looking forward to carry the unfinished agenda of his late grandmother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi who gave the slogan of ‘Garbi Hatao’. Congress has gone many steps further to the BJP’s offer of cash relief of Rs 6,000 per anum to Rs 6,000 per month to the farmers. The Congress chief said that the party has studied the fiscal implications of the scheme and consulted renowned economists and experts before finalising the scheme. It is an extremely powerful, ground-breaking and well-thought thorough idea. We have consulted many economists on the scheme,” he said. People have suffered in the last five years and we are going to give justice to them, he added. Congress’s ‘big bang’ theory on the economic uplift looks more of a wishful thinking than of a practical one.
