LAKHANPUR: The Excise and commercial taxes department on Friday foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantity of illicit liquor in Kathua district
During the search of a truck that was supposedly carrying household items at the Lakhanpur toll plaza, 2,400 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor were recovered from it, an official of the department said.
“200 cartons containing 2,400 bottles of Indian made foreign liquor were received from the truck that was supposedly carrying household goods,” the official said.
“The cases of liquor were further packed in plastic sacks to hide their identity. The vehicle was bearing a sticker of ‘On BSF Duty’ on its front. The seized liquor is blended and bottled by M/s Radico Khaitan Ltd. at M/s N.V Distilleries Ltd. Village Badholi, Naraingarh, Kalpi Road District Ambala Haryana. The liquor was not bearing any manufacturing date / batch No. etc”, he said.
He said that two people including the driver of the vehicle identified as Ajay Kumar, son of Chhotan Lal, resident of VPO Barsana, Tehsil Charkhi Dadri Bhiwani and his accomplice Sanjay Singh, resident of VPO Mahrana, Tehsil Charkhi Dadri, Bhiwani Haryana have been taken into custody and the truck along with the liquor and both the accused have been handed over to the Excise and Taxation Officer, Kathua Range for proceeding further under the provisions of Excise Act. Tsering Angchok, IAS, Excise Commissioner, J&K Government appreciated the efforts of the Excise Team at Lakhanpur headed by Rajesh Sharma, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur, for making the instant detection and enjoined upon them to make all out efforts to thwart the nefarious designs of smugglers and evaders.
