JAMMU: The IRP 17th in men section and IRP 15th in women category emerged overall champions in the Inter-battalion Sports Meet of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police (JKAP) which came to an end with the holding of valedictory function at Gulshan Ground, here on Thursday.
The exclusive women’s battalion of IRP 15th secured highest 181 points to take away the glittering trophy. Similarly, in men’s category, IRP 10th clinched overall trophy with 83 points in their tally.
With four gold and one silver medals each, Sgct. Sukhdev Magotra of IRP 17th Bn and Follower Imtiyaz Ahmad of IRP 10th were joint winner of the best athlete trophy. In women’s category, Sgct. Asha Jamwal of IRP 16th was named best athlete with two gold medals won and field and track events.
In the valedictory function, Director General of Police (DGP), J&K Police, Dr S.P Vaid was Chief Guest, who gave away the overall championship trophies as also other title trophies of team and individual events.
Before he declared the meet closed, the DGP appreciated the ADGP Armed, A.K Choudhary for successful conduct of the mega event. He also complimented the athletes excelling in various events and hoped that such events help the force tap the hidden talent within the police.
Appealing police personnel to adopt sports, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dr S P Vaid asked them to remain fitness is one of the major requirements in the police force.
“J&K Police Department is trying its best to promote sports because physical activity is must for our jawans,” Dr Vaid said while addressing the gathering at the closing ceremony of Inter-Battalion Sports Meet at Police Stadium here on Thursday evening.
A seven-day long meet was organised by the Armed Wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The Police Chief said, “sports is the best stress buster. I have seen aspirants coming for recruitment, many of them are suffering from diseases like blood pressure, diabetes because of their sedentary lifestyle”. “We should remain active and I appeal you (police personnel) to have interest in sports”, he said and added that the department lacks infrastructure at many places across the state but gradual efforts are on to raise sports infra for the force.
“Last year the meet could not be held but this time it has been organised with fanfare”, said Dr Vaid and added that after December 15, Inter-Zonal sports meet will also be organised, which will be a mega event.
“I have seen that our Central team, despite poor infrastructure brought laurels to the state and the department. If they will be provided better facilities, they can do wonders,” he asserted.
The Police Chief however, said that Jammu and Kashmir Police Department will be hosting 66th B A Mullick Memorial All India Police Football Tournament from February 1 to 11 next year in which national and international players of different police, para-military forces will take part.
He also announced a reward of Rs. 15,000 each for best eight contingents in march past.
Earlier, ADGP Armed welcomed the Chief Guest amidst a brief of the five-day long sports meet. IGP Armed Jammu Zone, S.A Watali presented vote of thanks.
