Attributed to David, Psalm 23 underscores the personal relationship between god and us.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want: David had confidence in god like sheep have confidence in the shepherd. We need to bring god into every moment of our lives by understanding his true nature. This is similar to the concept of sharanagati, surrender, expounded in Indic philosophy. We should be confident that god can judge our needs and provide for us, and that therefore, we shall not lack in our needs.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters: Like Krishna who led the cows to the meadows on the banks of the Yamuna, Christ leads sheep to fresh pastures that provide food, safety and rest. God knows when to give us rest, refreshment and spiritual nourishment.
He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. By surrendering our lives to god, we can draw closer to him and know that he will lead us up the right path. Without guidance, a sheep might easily wander off and get killed.
We too can get into trouble through senseless actions. God takes the responsibility to lead us. As Krishna assures us in the Bhagwad Gita, “Abandoning all dharmas of mind, body and intellect, take refuge in me alone. I will liberate thee from all sins.”
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. With the help of god’s protection, we overcome confusion and fear. The rod protected the sheep from predators and the staff pulled down juicy leaves for them. Both are symbols of protection and guidance, like the mudras of Hindu gods. The abhaya mudra shows the palm raised to protect while the vardana mudra shows the hand in the act of giving. When god protects and give us, why fear?
Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. We may be surrounded by evil, but when we surrender to god, he anoints our head with the oil of grace. His blessings will flow, and our cup will overflow; he will give us more than we deserve.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. If pain, old age, sickness and death are following us, we are also being pursued by the goodness and mercy of god. No one really knows what awaits us beyond the barriers of time and space, yet somehow this image beckons to us like the bright morning star.
