JAMMU: Chief Judicial Magistrate Jammu on Thursday extended three more days remand for one, Arjun Katal, along with his family, comprising mother, father and brother, arrested for allegedly abetting his wife to commit suicide.
Ajay Katal, a Statistical Assistant in the Civil Secretariat, was arrested soon after the body of his wife was recovered while floating in the River Chenab. As the parents of the lady claimed torture, the police immediately swung into action and arrested his mother Sudesh Kotwal, father Arvind Kotwal and brother Angad Katal.
Twenty eight year old Neha Naraina, mother of one and half year’s boy, is reported to have ended her life following continuous torture by her husband and his family since their marriage in 2012. Neha had called up her mother the day she took extreme step, telling her she could not bear anymore the torture and humiliation meted out to her. She is reported to have told her mother on cell phone that she was fed up with her life. In desperation, she ended up her life by jumping into River Chenab on 28th March.
Sources told STATE TIMES that Neha was subjected to constant thrashing and beating by her husband and his other family members at their Vikas Nagar residence for not having brought the dowry as per their expectations. Police is reported to have found frequent transactions in the bank account of her husband, which is believed to be the money brought by his wife from her parents in duress.
Sources said that Arjun had been operating Neha’s Facebook account and was also in contact with two other girls. On the face of it, the death or the suicide appears to be the outcome of torture and infidelity of Arjun Katal, they maintained.
Police is working on different angles of the case and sensational disclosures are expected as the interrogation of the family is continuing.
FIR under Section 306 RPC (abetment to suicide) and 498-A RPC (demanding dowry) has been registered at Domana Police Station in Jammu periphery.
